The Summer School of Practical Ophthalmology offers a unique opportunity in Europe to gain hands-on training in essential ophthalmic skills while connecting with like-minded peers. The program is specifically designed for final-year medical students who are pursuing a career in ophthalmology.
With nearly 300 applicants and only 18 participants selected this year, application materials should demonstrate a genuine interest and commitment to the field.

Summer School of Practical Ophthalmology in Prague 2025 Program
This year’s Summer School of Practical Ophthalmology program featured a comprehensive range of workshops and lectures, including:
Slit lamp examination techniques
Ophthalmologic ultrasound
Cataract surgery on pig eyes
Corneal suturing on pig eyes
YAG laser procedures
Virtual surgery using the Fidelis VR Ophthalmic Surgical Simulator
Ophthalmic imaging methods
Lectures on cutting-edge topics such as AI in Ophthalmology, Gene Therapy, Cataract Surgery, and Vitreoretinal Surgery

All workshops were conducted in small groups by experienced clinicians and researchers, ensuring high-quality, personalized instruction.

My Experience as a Participant
For me personally, it was the most valuable hands-on training experience I’ve had during medical school. Beyond the practical skills, the organizers and speakers openly shared their journeys into ophthalmology, providing insights into residency, fellowships, and research opportunities.
The program also fosters meaningful connections with fellow medical students and doctors from across Europe, offering the chance to exchange experiences, explore the beautiful city of Prague, and enjoy excellent food throughout the course.

Overall, the Summer School of Practical Ophthalmology was a highly enriching experience both professionally and personally—an ideal stepping stone before beginning ophthalmology residency.
I’m truly thankful for the opportunity to participate.
The participation fee for this year was 175€, which included breakfast, snacks, lunch, and a farewell dinner. Travel and accommodation expenses were not covered.
